Teaching Four Year Old Children to Read

The Educational Foundation, Head Start, and Francis Marion University have joined forces to develop an effective program for teaching four-year old children to read. Last year the Educational Foundation introduced the on-line reading program, Head Sprout, to the Head Start centers in Lake City and Olanta. That program lead to all 13 Pee Dee Community Action Partnership centers joining in utilizing this program this year in teaching four-year old children to read. Although this is a new expectation for the Head Start teachers, they are excited about this challenge and are eager for their students to begin reading.

Francis Marion University’s Department of Psychology is bringing its graduate students and their expertise in Human Behavior (Behavior Analysis) to boost the on-line program’s effectiveness. They will mentor the Pee Dee CAP instructors, tutor children who have more difficulty learning to read, and collect data on individual and group achievement to determine best practices. Ms. Barbara Cooper of Pee Dee CAP and FMU Assistant Professor Christopher Bullock are piloting the program with centers near the FMU campus. We plan to expand the model to Lake City and Olanta early in 2022. The remaining centers will get on-site help as the graduate students refine the model.

We expect to have all Head Start children reading before they enter Kindergarten next fall. We also expect them to be ready and excited to learn in their new school. We are delighted by the enthusiasm all parties have for this venture and anticipate great things for our kids.
